The Snows of Mt. Kilimanjaro

Living on the slopes of the tallest mountain in Africa can, at times, yield an impressive view. Some days, the ones with out clouds, we have a spectacular view of the mountain.Kili-6Kili-11 Kili-5

There is even a good view reflected out front door:

On most days, however, the mountain is shrouded in cloud leaving little…  Kili-9 Kili-10

… or none of the mountain visible.

Post-rain periods hold their own surprises. Like rainbows…

… and snow!

  1. Lovely! #2 is my favorite of your series of Kili photos - clouds hovering at the base of the snowline and shadowing the snow just a bit. During my long-ago two childhood years boarding at ISM, the mountain was a daily presence, visible or hidden.

Thank you for sharing the grand views!!!

  2. Do you ever hear locals discussing global climate change relative to the decreasing snow cover on Kili? I just wonder if it is "on their radar."

  3. Mara, there's an article about climbing Kilimnanjaro in this past Sunday's Mpls Star Tribune travel section (available online.) It describes the Chagga guide's concern about the receding glaciers & snowline and also has a video clip in his own words. I'm not able to post the link by copying and pasting, but I see I can type out the web address. If you're not able to cut and paste the address, maybe you can do a search via star tribune, lifestyle, travel, Jan. 30th. Here is my attempt to write out the address:
